Joe Small 日本太鼓演奏家及編舞家
Joe Small ，專業太鼓藝術家。其創作概念融合後現代舞蹈及表演藝術。
出生並成長於美國紐約州水牛城，Joe Small對日本太鼓藝術的熱情始於2002年在斯沃斯莫爾學院（Swarthmore College ）研讀當代舞蹈和戲劇。師承Kenny Endo，Joe於夏威夷太平洋太鼓中心首次接受正式及嚴峻的太鼓訓練。後來於2004年及2005年相繼獲得亞裔美國人聖荷西太鼓隊（Asian-American taiko groups San Jose Taiko ）及波特蘭太鼓隊（Portland Taiko）之邀請成為學徒，研習太鼓藝術並參與巡迴公演。
自斯沃斯莫爾學院畢業後，Joe榮獲傅爾布萊特為期一年的獎學金（Fulbright Fellowship－傅爾布萊特計畫是世界最聲譽崇隆的獎助計劃之一；迄今，此計劃的學友榮獲諾貝爾獎人數遠超其他類似的學術計劃）。Joe得獎後遠赴日本大阪國立民族博物館研習太鼓及民間慶典藝術；其後，Joe加入日本佐渡國際知名專業太鼓演奏組合‘鼓童’在島上為期兩年的學徒訓練。2009年訓練結束後，Joe返回美國成爲太鼓獨奏家並獲邀為紐約日本尺八藝術家馬可·林哈德（Marco Lienhard）成立的太鼓組合Taikoza太鼓手並自此活躍於美國。
自2012年Joe成為日本首席太鼓獨奏家林英哲的唯一非日本人弟子，成為英哲風雲會之隊員，跟從林英哲大師並參與爲期兩年的特訓，在日本、中東及美國巡迴演出。2015年，Joe首個原創太鼓音樂劇場 【Spall Fragments】 正式誕生。此劇場爲世界首個糅合太鼓、舞蹈及説唱之舞臺作品，以獨特幽默方式，探討太鼓藝術古今文化，并於洛杉磯首次公演。同年，澳洲悉尼專業太鼓演奏組合TaikOz以國際客席演奏家名譽，邀請其同台演出並大獲好評。2016年，Joe載譽帶領【Spall Fragments】於美國西岸巡迴演出。
Joe Small於2005 畢業於Swarthmore College 斯沃斯莫爾學院，主修舞蹈學士課程 (BA, Dance) 並於2015年畢業於美國加州大學洛杉磯分校，完成世界藝術及文化／舞蹈學院藝術碩士，探討太鼓與後現代舞蹈混合及跨領域之可能性。
曾與他合作過的藝術家包括Chey Chankethya (柬埔寨舞蹈家), Laurel Jenkins (現代舞藝術家), Lenny Seidman (印度tabla手鼓藝術家), Joshua Smith (日本尺八藝術家)及Shoran (日本書法家).
Joe Small現為太鼓獨奏藝術家並居於美國洛杉磯，活躍於創作及表演，同時兼任太鼓學校及太鼓工作坊導師。
